WHAT CLAY DO I HAVE?

The clay included in your kit is a white mid-fire clay and is suitable for all pottery creations.

CAN I FIRE MY CLAY IN THE OVEN?

No, unfortunately! If you would like to have your pieces fired, you will have to contact your local pottery/clay studio to arrange the firings.

HOW DOES FIRING WORK?

If you are wanting to create pieces that you would like to use as crockery, you will need to have your pieces fired to make them safe to wash.

The first firing is called a 'bisque' and this turns your clay into ceramic. As the clay is a mid-fire, the bisque temperature will be approximately 1000°C.

The second firing is called a 'glaze' firing. Before your pieces go back in the kiln, you can brush on a mid-fire glaze of your choice. We particularly love white or speckled glazes! The temperature of the glaze fire will be approximately 1220°C.

HOW LONG DO I WAIT BEFORE FIRING?

Before taking your pieces to the kiln, it is important that you wait between 7-14 days for your pieces to be bone dry. This will mean that they are not cold to touch and have turned a paler white.

WHAT SURFACE IS BEST FOR POTTERY?

The best surfaces to do your pottery on are plywood, canvas, wooden surfaces or a silicone mat. However, if you do not own anything like this, a wooden chopping board is the next best option!
